Why Obasa’s Impeachment Is Justified – General Olanrewaju

Says It’s ‘Law of Karma at Work’

The impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, January 13, 2025, has sparked mixed reactions. Among the most striking is the response from Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (rtd), former Minister of Communications and Alternate Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of De Renaissance Patriots.

In a report published by Freedom Online, General Olanrewaju described Obasa’s ousting as a manifestation of the “Law of Karma.” Referring to his earlier warning in 2023, he criticized Obasa for ignoring advice to cede the Speaker position to an indigene of Lagos State.

“The third spiritual law of success is the Law of Karma,” Olanrewaju noted, quoting from The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. “‘Karma is both action and the consequences of that action... What you sow is what you reap.’”

The retired general outlined his reasons why Obasa’s fall was inevitable:

1. Overstepping Political Boundaries:

Olanrewaju accused Obasa of arrogance and overreaching in his political ambitions, ignoring warnings and the delicate balance of power in Lagos politics.

2. Ambition Without Authorization:

He likened Obasa’s declaration to enter the gubernatorial race without endorsement as a political misstep, describing it as “an unpardonable harakiri.”

3. Ignoring Advice to Step Down:

The general recalled warning Obasa against seeking a third term as Speaker, urging him to respect the right of Lagos indigenes to occupy the position. Despite being from Ogun State, Obasa persisted, which Olanrewaju claims led to his downfall.

4. Political Overreach by Non-Indigenes:

He criticized the trend of non-indigenes dominating Lagos politics, accusing them of disregarding accountability and the rule of law, which alienates the indigenous population.

5. Lessons in Leadership:

Olanrewaju concluded by emphasizing the importance of empowering Lagos indigenes, warning that similar political miscalculations could lead to more falls from grace.

“Obasa’s impeachment is a reminder that political power must be wielded with wisdom and humility,” Olanrewaju said. “A stitch in time saves nine.”
